If you have started reading this blog and are ready to make some changes in your life, then this will be a great resource. The unemployment rate right now is a staggeringly low 4.1%.
With an unemployment rate that low, there are bound to be job openings in the high salary ranges. If you desire to have a high salary, there is no better time to make some changes.
Let’s do a little thought experiment. Think about how you arrived in your current line of work. Was it though a friend referral, online job posting, or you just happened to stumble into a career. Whatever the reason, think about how you arrived at your current situation. Did you just fall into a line of work or did you plan and make very specific decisions based on research? Now, think about where you want to go. If your current line of work is not getting you to where you want, you need to change. But, I want you to change the way you make decisions.
Building a life you want takes time but it also will take a change in thinking. In the past, you look at your skills and matched those to an industry or job that fits those skills. The change is going to be how you select the industry, not by your skills, but earning potential. Money is not everything, but remember that your life goal is to gain financial independence, you can’t do that without money. Going after the highest salary you can is not a bad strategy.
You have the freedom to work in any industry and select any job you want. You may not be qualified to work in any industry, but don’t limit yourself by your preconceived notions. Do some research, plan, and take action.
Do Some Research
What industries pay the highest salaries? Obviously the medical industry gets the highest pay due to the nature of their business, saving lives. But, right under all that is computer technology. This field is as wide and diverse as the medical industry. There is probably something for every skill set imaginable as long as you can select a role within that industry that matches your natural strengths.
Planning
If you have filled out the Hedgehog Sheet, then you have a good view of your passions, talents, and value. The computer technology industry has many many roles that people can fill that are not technical, but very valuable. Art, design, project management, technical writing, business development, finance, human resources, facility management, and security. Find a tech company and look at their current job openings. Read through the requirements of the job and refer back to your Hedgehog sheet. Do you see any matches with your value or your talents? If so, you are on the right track.
Action
Find ways to get in the door. This involves taking stock of your current situation and building your future around getting a job in a high paying field. No education? Get some. There are plenty of programs out there to get low cost or free education. Go find some classes, online courses, free career counselors, books, publications, or any other resources that you can find.
This will not be easy, but if you desire to improve, you must take massive action. The work you put in will reward you in the long run. You have to be willing to put in the work to reap the rewards.
After you are in the door, immediately start to work hard, harder than you have ever worked before and perform to the highest level possible. This is the way that you advance, get more rewards, climb the ladder, and achieve the kind of salary you deserve.
It’s the same in any industry, in any role, in any line of work. Work hard, get rewarded with more work, more responsibility, and more money.
Rethinking how you select your career must change from “what are my skills” to “how much can I earn”. This little change will start you on the path of endless opportunity instead of dead end job. Try it, what is stopping you?
